Ditch Those Restrictive Diets For Intuitive Eating For Weight Loss
There seems to be a new diet every week. Youve probably heard of some of them: keto, paleo, low-carb, South Beach And the list goes on and on.
And while each of these diets may have their benefits, they rely on one crucial factor: willpower. But willpower runs short after a while, which leaves us with our habits.
Most of us want to lose weight because our eating habits contributed to a high body weight. So falling back into old habits is the last thing we want to do.
That’s where Intuitive Eating comes in.
Intuitive eating isn’t a diet. You don’t count calories and you don’t restrict yourself.
Instead, intuitive eating wants us to pay attention to when we feel hungry, what our bodies want, and how much of it we actually need to eat. It’s all about getting back in touch with our bodies, our appetites, and the way we feel about food.
How Does Intuitive Eating Work?
There are a few ways we can become intuitive eaters. The first and most talked about is to only eat when we’re hungry.
Many of us eat at prescribed mealtimes or whenever we’re out with friends. We’ll eat even if we aren’t hungry, just because it’s what we’re supposed to do. We might even eat when were bored or when were upset.SPECIAL: Whats REALLY Causing Your Weight Gain, High Blood Pressure & Constant Fatigue (If Youre Over 30 You Need to See This)…
But when we eat needlessly, it is more likely to be stored as fat. On the other hand, when we eat out of hunger, our bodies use food as fuel. intuitive eating reminds us of this.
This is, unfortunately, easier said than done for many of us. We eat on our work breaks, when it works for our families, or when we can squeeze a meal in between other obligations.
That doesn’t mean intuitive eating is impossible, of course. It just makes this method a little bit harder.
Another way we can begin to eat intuitively is by paying attention to our cravings. Are you craving meat? You should probably eat some since that’s your body’s way of telling you it needs protein or iron.
Are you craving sugar? Some people find that sugar cravings are a sign of low energy levels or insulin imbalance.
Our cravings are not random. They usually mean something. We just need to listen.
Yet another way to approach intuitive eating is to log what we eat without judging ourselves.
The point of the food log is not to restrict or punish ourselves. Quite the opposite, actually.
Intuitive eating food logs are only used to track the things that make us eat and to gain a clear picture of what we’re eating. Do we eat when we’re sad or bored? Are we eating a lot of starch but not a lot of protein?
Answering these questions helps us reconnect with ourselves. As women, we often carry so much guilt about our food, especially when we’re overweight.TRENDING: This Massive Mistake Melted 48lbs Off Her Body (Click Here to See How)…
But guilt and anxiety will only make it harder to lose weight. Every decision is stressful and makes us unhappy.
We deserve better than that, and intuitive eating can help us identify that guilt. Once we identify it, we can learn better eating and thinking habits.
Does Intuitive Eating Work?
Intuitive eating works! By itself, however, intuitive eating may not lead to weight loss.
This is because intuitive eating is not a diet. It’s a way to take stock of our habits and cravings, our hangups and needs. And, to that end, it is very effective.
One recent study found that intuitive eating led to a lower BMI, but only when its practicing consistently over time. The researchers think this is because people lose their guilt towards food. This, combined with lightly giving in to cravings, reduces binge eating over time.TRENDING: Science Reveals Easy, No-Workout Ways to Lose Weight While You Snooze!
It might seem like giving in to our cravings will increase our desire for junk food. And for some people, such as those with insulin imbalances, this may be true.
But when we give in to cravings, those foods lose their forbidden fruit appeal. We know that we can have a cupcake or a candy bar when we really want to. So when we see one in the store, it doesn’t offer the same temptation.
How Do I Start Intuitive Eating?
The beauty of intuitive eating is that you can start right now.
Are you hungry? Then eat something! Are you eating or drinking something that you’re not really enjoying? Then stop!
People with medical conditions should consult a doctor first, of course. But barring those exceptions, anyone can begin to eat intuitively at any time.BRAND-NEW: 5 Living Nutrients That Can Trigger Rapid Fat Loss!
It is best to start slow. This means paying attention to your hunger cues and eating something when your body is hungry. As you become more comfortable with this, you can add in a food or feelings log.
Learning to listen to our bodies isn’t easy. We’re often detached from our food and from many of our bodies’ cues. We’re going to slip up and make mistakes as we learn this new way of eating.
But practice makes perfect. Over time, we’ll learn to make conscious food choices, to eat what our bodies need, and to use food as nourishment, rather than restriction or punishment. And that’s what it’s all about.
