When your microbiome is thrown out of balance, however, you see negative effects. This could be skin issues like acne weight gain depression digestive problems like IBS and the list goes on and on.

How A Vegan Diet Boosts Your Gut Health
The study that found how a plant-based diet benefits your gut was conducted over a period of 16 weeks. During this time, one group of study participants ate a low-fat vegan diet. The other group ate their normal diet with no changes.
BRAND-NEW: 5 Living Nutrients That Can Trigger Rapid Fat Loss!At the end of the 16-week period, the group who ate a vegan diet were found to have higher levels of beneficial bacteria in their systems. Specifically, a strain called Faecalibacterium prausnitzii increased by 4.8%. Another strain, called Bacteoides fragilis, increased by a whopping 19.5%!
The researchers noted that the vegan diet led to an increased content of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. These particular bacteria feed on fiber and if youre eating a plant-based diet, youre likely to have plenty of good plant fiber in your system!
When these bacteria feed on fiber, as well as sugars and starches found in plants, they produce short-chain fatty acids. These compounds were then found to lead to great effects for your body including lower body weight and greater insulin sensitivity.

How To Get Started On A Vegan Diet
Alright, so its obvious that going vegan can have huge benefits for your gut health AND your waistline. But how do you get started especially if youre a bit nervous about going meat-free?
First, its important to note that not EVERY vegan diet will support your microbiome and lead to weight loss. After all, not all vegan foods are healthy!
In the study, the participants ate a low-fat vegan diet. So you have to watch your fat intake if you want to see similar results.
Here are a few tips for getting started on a plant-based diet:
1) Eat a variety of foods.
Its easy to get pigeon-holed if you arent familiar with vegan eating. Dont forget that lots of foods are vegan!
So dont think all you can eat is broccoli with a side of spinach. Think of all of the foods you CAN eat like nuts and nut butters, whole grains and cereals, seeds, plant-based proteins, plant milks and yogurts, legumes, fermented plant foods and of course, fruits and vegetables.

3) Dont make the shift all at once if you dont want to.
Dont go cold-turkey on animal products if you dont want to. Theres no trophy waiting for you if you go all-vegan faster!
Ease into a vegan diet by slowing phasing out animal products from your diet. Maybe youll cut out beef this week, chicken the next, and eggs the next. Go at a pace that fits your life.
