Easy DIY Paleo Taco Seasoning

If you’re anything like me, when you first saw the title of this recipe, you may have thought:

“Um… isn’t ALL taco seasoning technically paleo-friendly? It’s just spices, right?”

Wrong.

While doing my research, I discovered that most major brands of taco seasoning are secretly packed with pretty horrible ingredients. And they definitely are not paleo-friendly.

For example, one of the most popular brands contains dried lactose (milk sugar) AND wheat flour.

Another brand, which you may recognize in the yellow box with the colorful image of a taco on it, is even worse, and contains:

Corn starch…

Vegetable oil…

Corn flour…

And silicon dioxide, which in my opinion does not even sound like it should go on, in or around food.

Yikes.

That’s why, if you’re going to use taco seasoning, homemade is FAR better than anything you can find at the store.

And the good news is, this taco seasoning is an absolute cinch to make at home!

Not to mention you can sprinkle it on just about anything—tacos, sure, but also potatoes, in soups, on eggs, and the list goes on—with insanely delicious results.

Plus, it contains both cocoa powder and nutritional yeast, which are each scientifically linked to a host of health benefits (something I think we could all use a little bit more of right now, no?). 🙂

Here’s how it’s done:

FTH’s Easy, Flavor-Packed Paleo Taco Seasoning

Equipment Needed: mortar & pestle, coffee grinder, blender or food processor

Recipe Time: 15 minutes

Makes: Enough for about 6 lbs of taco meat

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp cumin seed, toasted and ground
  • 1.5 Tbsp coriander seed, toasted and ground
  • 2 Tbsp smoked paprika
  • 3 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder (can also use cacao powder—see Recipe  Notes)
  • 2 tsp sea salt

Directions:

1) Combine all the ingredients and mix.

In a bowl or mason jar, combine all the ingredients for the seasoning. If you’re using a bowl, mix with a clean spoon. If you’re using a jar, put a lid on it and shake.

Taste the seasoning and adjust as needed, then store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

Recipe Notes

  • Cacao powder is known to be less processed than cocoa powder, and so is a better choice for this seasoning. However, if you don’t have it at home, regular old cocoa powder will work just fine.
  • The great thing about this taco seasoning is that you can leave out an ingredient if you don’t have it, or substitute something else, and it’ll still be delicious. Don’t be afraid to make this your own!

  • Pounding the whole, toasted spices in a mortar and pestle will yield the deepest and most complex-tasting seasoning, but if you only have a blender or food processor, that will also work. You can also use pre-ground spices if that’s all you have.

Make These Mexican Loaded Baked Potatoes For A Simple & Delicious Paleo-Friendly Weeknight Dinner…

One of the things I personally missed most when I was doing paleo… was real-deal tacos, using corn tortillas.

So while these loaded baked potatoes may not be *exactly* the same—they are extremely delicious, satisfying, and super quick to make.

Here’s how:

Preheat your oven to 375 F.

Puncture the outside of about 4 large potatoes, preferably russets, and rub the outside of each in a light coat of avocado or coconut oil.

Bake until a fork can be easily inserted into the potatoes, about 1 hour.

Let the potatoes rest for 5 minutes, then split them open lengthwise and scoop the flesh into a separate bowl. Add 1 tbsp of coconut or avocado oil for each potato, plus as much taco seasoning as you want. Then mash, taste, adjust with more salt and seasoning as needed.

Scoop the mashed potatoes back into the skins, and top with whatever you want. Cooked taco meat, caramelized onions, and pepitas are my go-to toppings of choice.

Sprinkle each potato with more paleo taco seasoning, then return the potatoes to the oven just until hot.

Top with fresh cilantro and/or sliced avocado and enjoy immediately!

How Eating More Of These Rich & Indulgent Loaded Baked Potatoes Can Actually Help You LOSE Weight…

With summer coming up, I know I’m definitely cringing at the thought of putting on my bathing suit after spending so much time inside, cultivating my “couch body”… (or my jeans, to be honest…)

And while I’d normally get my “summer body” back by torturing myself… drinking disgusting green juice for breakfast every morning and eating salads for dinner every night… going to bed starving and falling asleep to the sound of my stomach gurgling (ugh)… thanks to this loaded baked potato recipe, I don’t have to. 🙂

That’s because the paleo diet, and diets that follow our ancestor’s eating habits from millions of years ago, naturally support increased fat burn and weight loss!

It’s science:

Researchers recently analyzed the gut bacteria of a “lost tribe” from the Tanzanian wilderness in Africa… and made some pretty shocking discoveries from it.

Interestingly, members of this “lost tribe” actually ate A LOT of food… yet remained incredibly lean, despite eating a lot of calories every day. (They sound like my kind of people…)

And that’s because this kind of prehistoric diet (very similar to the Paleo diet) supports a particular kind of bacteria in your gut… that “eats” sugar and fat that would normally accumulate on your “problem areas”… and turns it into fuel that will give you more natural energy.

Pretty cool, right?

So if you want to know exactly what to eat to cultivate more of this naturally “fat-burning” bacteria… plus how to get these same exact fat-burning benefits, even if you don’t strictly follow the Paleo diet right now…
