Summer has officially started, which means just one thing: swimsuit season is upon us. Normally this time of the year is met with more than a little bit of anxiety, but this year?

Sadly, despite all the proven health benefits of wine… it has no place in a diet if you’re trying to shed a few pounds. In fact, it could even cause you to gain weight instead.

There are a few problems with alcohol in a weight loss diet. One, alcohol is one of the highest calorie macronutrients—second only to fat.

It has a whopping 7 calories per gram, which is 3 more than protein and carbs. Conversely, fat has 9 calories per gram.

But wine won’t fill you up. You’ll just be drinking empty calories.
