So…the novel coronavirus pandemic is, unfortunately, still going on.

What’s more, it’s likely to continue affecting all of our lives in the coming future. This can be especially frustrating because in an effort to keep ourselves and others safe… all of us are (hopefully) practicing social distancing… perhaps working from home… and doing a lot of other things that we are just not used to!

One thing that has been really frustrating for me is that my gym is closed. Of course, this is understandable… and probably the right decision as Americans try to slow the spread of the virus.

I’ve still been trying to work out during the pandemic… partly because working out really makes me feel better mentally… and also because it gives me an excuse to get up and get moving.

But working out at home is still sort of weird to me. And sometimes, I feel like I’m just not getting the same workout as when I would hit the gym or head to those group fitness classes.

What’s the good news in all of this?

Well, it might just be smarter to tone down your exercise regimen amid COVID-19.

Let me explain why… because when I first heard this, I had lots of questions!

Why You Should Stop High-Intensity Exercise

Some people are now recommending that you take your fitness regimen down to moderate or even low-intensity levels because of the virus. There’s a really good explanation, too.

Extensive high-level activities are shown to actually lower your immune system. One study found that after a really long, hard workout… your body is less likely to be able to fight off an infection.

What does this mean? Well, it indicates that it might be smart to make some changes in your daily workouts.

The article I referenced recommends having less than one-third of your total time spent exercising be high-intensity.

Also, studies show that you might want to lower how many HIIT workouts you do as well (so you don’t overtrain).

The good news of this is that it should make you feel better if you have been struggling with putting in the same amount of fitness work amid the virus. In fact, it might be healthier not to!

But… you should still be trying to get some exercise, of course. I’m a big fan of this… and will always recommend exercise as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

It doesn’t even have to be anything crazy. Even just walking around the neighborhood for a half hour every day (safely, of course!) is great for the body.

We should all still try to do some sort of exercise for around 30 minutes a day… but keep in mind this new idea that perhaps you should be tapering off how hard you’re working out.

Also, try to get outside every day… even if it is just sitting on the front stoop for a bit!

How To Stay Healthy & Fit Without Exercising

Now, what if you’re not able to work out? How can you maintain a healthy lifestyle for staying healthy and in-shape during quarantine that DON’T involve fitness?

I’ve got some great ideas!

1) Try a standing desk.

You can either go all-out with this or even just sort of DIY your home work area to allow yourself to stand during the day.

There have been a lot of benefits shown from standing desks. Even though you likely only burn slightly more calories standing than sitting… there are other presumed health benefits. 

For example, studies have shown that blood sugar levels return back to normal faster on days when people spend more time standing.

2) Drink more water.

Not only is water incredibly important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle… but the more water you drink, the more it will force you to get up and move around a little bit.

While this isn’t “working out,” it’s still going to benefit your body and ensure that you’re not stationary for too long while quarantined.

3) Clean.

Chores can burn calories! This added benefit allows you to keep a clean house amid all of the chaos and still burn off that breakfast.

Sweeping and mopping can burn up to 240 calories in an hour. Even cooking can burn around 150 calories an hour!

Other ideas include gardening and painting, if you’re really looking to do some home decorating!

These are just a few ideas on how to stay healthy amid quarantine without necessarily working out.

If you do work out, remember that it might be better to keep things largely at a moderate- to low-intensity. This means you should be able to chat during it!

You want to make sure you’re doing everything in your power to continue living that healthy lifestyle WHILE staying safe (for ourselves and for others). This can be really difficult, and it’s a crazy time.

But, with some simple changes in your routine and an ability to sort of “roll with the punches”… you will get through this. And, who knows… maybe you’ll find a new routine during all of this that you LOVE!
