Sugar is definitely one thing that Ive never thought I could live without even though its empty calories! Some days, I just crave it!

If youre like me, youve probably struggled to cut out sugar.

But the good news is that there are some easy ways to reduce your sugar intake… and even stop you from craving those empty calories! Its a lot easier than I ever thought it just takes a bit of discipline.

You dont even have to totally cut out sugar (just make sure you arent having too much of it!)

The first thing to remember is that there are some sneaky phrases and names for sugar. Evaporated cane juice, brown rice syrup, barley malt, and glucose are all other ways that companies label sugar.

Next, exactly how much sugar is okay for you to consume?

One teaspoon of sugar has four grams in it. Men shouldnt have over nine teaspoons a day, and women should try to avoid eating more than six teaspoons a day.

I know this sounds like a super small amount, but its actually more than you think!

An easy way to think about this is that you shouldnt have more than 10 percent of your daily calories from sugar. If you can get as low at five percent, thats even better! This advice comes from the World Health Organization.

It can definitely be hard, because thats not a lot of sugar per day! But its totally doable.

7 Simple Tips For Eating Less Sugar

Here are some great, simple tips on the best ways to cut down on your sugar intake and start living a healthier lifestyle:

1) Try to cut back your intake slowly.

It can be super hard to give something like this up all at once… so slowly change your diet and cut the sugar one step at a time!

2) Substitute other flavors & spices for sugar.

One way to cut back on sugar is to start substituting it for things that taste similar… but are way healthier. Lemon, unsweetened cocoa powder, and cinnamon are all pretty good substitutes for sugar.

3) Cut out soda!

This has been super tough for me because I love soda. One thing thats worked well is changing it up for some carbonated water. I still get the bubbles, but not all that sugar!

4) Get into the dark chocolate!

Personally, I dont think that I could ever fully cut out sweets.

The great thing about dark chocolate is that its less sugary and fatty, so if you feel the need to have some sweets, go for the dark chocolate. Delicious!

5) Cook more!

Processed foods tend to have more sugar in them because it can help increase how long they will stay good for.

The fresher food you have, the better! Try adding in more fresh fruit to your breakfast thats one easy way.

6) Eat more fruit.

Speaking of fruit, this is a great addition!

Fresh fruit is great, and canned fruits isnt bad either (as long as its in water or natural juice.) Add fruit to your daily diet in place of sugared foods, and your body will thank you!

7) Cut down on how many “bad” snacks you eat.

Just like substituting things that taste similar, try to start by eating just a little less of those unhealthy (but delicious) junk foods.

Its a lot easier to cut back on sugar this way!

Why You Should Eat Less Sugar

So, why exactly is sugar so bad for you?

Sugar has a ton of calories in it. It can cause poor cholesterol and increase your risk for coronary heart disease. Sugar may also increase inflammation, which is bad for the heart. It can cause tooth decay, too. Not fun!

This study found that sugar has a huge effect on your cholesterol. People who consume more added sugars have less good cholesterol. You want your levels of good cholesterol to be higher because it takes up extra bad cholesterol.

Another study showed that even if you arent overweight, eating too much sugar can increase your chances of dying from heart disease. Sure, sugar is sweet… but the risks far outweigh how good it tastes!

Not only is it better for your health, but its better for weight loss too! Since its all empty calories, sugar could possibly be really killing your weight loss goals.
